Security firm Authentium claimed they have cracked PatchGuard which is included in the 64-bit version of Windows Vista. According to reports, they found a way to disable the protection so that they could install their kernel patches and enable the technology once again.

Microsoft Security Expert Michael Howard provides a very technical explanation of the security strategies behind Windows Vista (via Robert McLaws):
There are two overarching goals at work – the first is to reduce the number of bugs in the code, and the second is to make it harder to reliably exploit any bugs that remain.
