Black Screen for Windows Vista & XP

Microsoft has recently announced that Windows Vista will display a black screen when upgraded from OneKey Recovery 5.0 installed copies of Vista RTM to Windows Vista SP 1. Likewise, upgrading to Windows XP SP3 from SP2 would also bring the black screen.

In an excerpt:

Microsoft has warned end users that performing Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 upgrades from copies of XP SP2 and Vista RTM, respectively, that have Onekey Recovery 5.0 installed will cause the operating systems to display a black screen following reboot. Series on Windows Vista Performance and Tuning

Microsoft released a document a week ago about Windows Vista Performance and Tuning. The document is about educating the user on configuring their Vista to meet the balance between speed and responsiveness. In an excerpt:

Windows Vista and SP1 focus on delivering greater performance and overall system responsiveness. By striking a balance between speed and responsiveness, Windows Vista and SP1 deliver a level of performance that has the greatest positive impact on the system’s usability. This guide looks at the following areas of performance improvement:

• Making configuration changes that help a computer feel more responsive when you use it.
• Using hardware to boost the actual physical speed of a computer.
• Making configuration changes that help a computer to start faster.
• Making the computer more reliable may help increase performance.
• Monitoring performance occasionally so that you can stop problems before they get too big.

Microsoft just keeps on releasing documents, information and stuff that erases the negative stigma that Vista has delivered in its early days. Given that they have dropped XP and are forcing consumers to use Vista, it is just right that they keep on supplying these information spending a few bucks here and there. They did sell 160 million licenses and that is a lot of money for them.

You can download the document here.

Microsoft Says Firefox is a Threat to Microsoft Vista

In Microsoft’s recently filed annual 10-K report to the Securities and Exchange Commission, they noted that Firefox is a threat to Windows Vista and is one of its competitors.

Given that Internet Explorer is free to download, it may seem confusing why Firefox is a competitor. The reason for this may have something to do with Cloud Computing, a vertical market that Microsoft is pushing into. The vast amount of add-ons available in Firefox may be seen as threat that Microsoft as many of these directly compete with Microsoft like Scribefire, competiting against Windows Live Writer, only available for Vista.

Windows Vista 64-bit has Tripled

Microsoft official blog has reported that Windows Vista 64-bit edition has already tripled in the last three months in the US as they have tracked this through their Windows update service. As reported: We’ve been tracking the change by looking at the percentage of 64-bit PCs connecting to Windows Update, and have seen a dramatic increase in recent months. The installed base of 64-bit Windows Vista PCs, as a percentage of all Windows Vista systems, has more than tripled in the U.S. in the last three months, while worldwide adoption has more than doubled during the same period. Another view shows that 20% of new Windows Vista PCs in the U.S. connecting to Windows Update in June were 64-bit PCs, up from just 3% in March. Put more simply, usage of 64-bit Windows Vista is growing much more rapidly than 32-bit. Based on current trends, this growth will accelerate as the retail channel shifts to supplying a rapidly increasing assortment of 64-bit desktops and laptops.

The 64-bit version of Windows Vista brings so much power compared to its 32-bit counterpart which means that more users are not concerned on the price tag given that 64-bit version are more expensive. Consumer complain on the hardware expenses on converting to Windows Vista which is just the 32-bit version but given that the 64-bit is gaining traction only means a brighter future and greater acceptance of Vista as a whole.

This is the only Windows Vista Codec Package You Would Ever Need

Shark double 0 seven, simply Shark007 has bold claims that the package found on their site is the only video codec you would need to solve all your problems. In an excerpt:

When dealing with codecs, more does not equal better.

Having the least amount on your system is the best configuration.

This is exactly what the Vista Codec Package does for you.

You will no longer be restricted to using a specific player.

Windows MediaPlayer and Vista MediaCenter will be able to play all your files.

I don’t have a lot of media needs at the moment and I am still thinking of trying this package out; however, online-tech-tips have and urgent need and says it has worked — So I really do suggest everybody who owns Vista gives this a try, it really is one of the coolest solutions to a very annoying problem I have found in a long time.

I might try this out one of these days. Here is the download page.

Steve Ballmer Get His Hands Dirty

Steve Ballmer has seen enough of Kevin Johnson who head Microsoft’s platform and services division. Likewise, he was the president of Windows Vista division.

Johnson have three executives reporting directly to him and none have been appointed to take the position of Kevin; instead, Steve Ballmer has asked all these executives to report to him directly. These executives are Steven Sinofsky (lead for next version of Windows), John Devaan (oversees Windows core components and architecture) and Bill Veghte (oversee sales and marketing of Windows).

Kevin Johnson has been with Microsoft for almost 16 years and is believed to be on anyone’s shortlist to become CEO. However, his departure only means serious business for Steve Ballmer who wants to fix their online business services which just posted losses of 1.23 billion dollars. This years’ loss is double than the previous year despite their full swing and intention of consolidating everything in live.

I have a lot of faith in Steve Ballmer. I always believed he have the legendary potential of Jack Welch, the greatest CEO in the 21st century.

Hopefully he can stir Windows and their live services to profitability and stability.

The Chart that Tells the Story

vistachart.jpg

The chart above was posted over at ZDNet. It clearly shows that Microsoft dominates the operating system market by 94++ market share; however, Windows XP accounts for almost 90% of it. With the retirement of Windows XP, Microsoft is hoping that the 90% is shifting over to Windows Vista. This could be a good strategy but it could also mean opportunity for MAC and other operating system.

Microsoft has begun their marketing campaign with 300 million dollars. This is meant to correct the negative image about the operating system’s problems; however, despite its’ stability, the high requirements and high costs of moving into Windows may be too much to users. But what I know, its still much cheaper than buying a MAC. Linux/others? I don’t think so.

Microsoft pumps 300 million USD

Vista

Microsoft seems confident of their product, Windows Vista, as they begun their offensive marketing assault telling consumers and enterprises how good the product is. The image above is a marketing campaign that brings you to the facts, good & positive, of Windows Vista. Microsoft’s VP of Windows Vista has this to say:

You thought the sleeping giant was still sleeping?

Well, we’ve woken up, and it’s time to take our message forward.

When Windows Vista debuted in January 2007, we declared it the best operating system we had ever made. Windows Vista is beautiful, The New York Times raved. It’s humbling that millions of you agree.

But we know a few of you were disappointed by your early encounter. Printers didn’t work. Games felt sluggish. You told us–loudly at times–that the latest Windows wasn’t always living up to your high expectations for a Microsoft product…Our goal is always to make each new version of Windows better than the last. With Windows Vista, we’re convinced we succeeded.

Microsoft has chosen a new strategy to erase the stigma of Windows Vista in its early days. They have humbly admitted the problems the operating system first had and how it has evolved 18 months after into a stable and worthy system. With 300 million on their campaign, it should go a long way pushing their image up positively.
