A Look Into Windows Memory Diagnostics

by Milo on October 2nd, 2008

More information on Windows Vista.

I remember the challenges I had during the days of Windows XP when my computer kept on restarting and later on the technician found out it was a Memory problem and that my chip had to be replaced. I knew I could have easily done the testing if I had spare computer parts to test on; but instead, I had to carry my box all the way to the shop.

In Windows Vista, you could easily have this test done using the Windows Memory Diagnostics tool. To access this feature, you can use the following steps:

1. Start button
2. Click on Control Panel
3. Clicking the System and Maintenance icon
4. Click Administrative Tools
5. Click the Memory Diagnostics Tool icon

Windows Memory Diagnostics

On the screen, click on “Restart now and check for problems (recommended). This is a handy Windows Vista tool that you can use to determine the health of your computer. RAM is the most common culprit I have experienced whenever my Windows Vista restarts or having trouble starting up.

What if your computer doesn’t start?

There are two other options you can use if Windows Vista doesn’t reach a point where you can use the steps above. These two options are:

1. Windows Boot Manager - this is the console screen you see upon bootup when you press F8. The console would have the option of “Windows Memory Diagnostic” at the bottom of the screen. Simply scroll down there and hit enter.

2. Windows Vista DVD - use your Windows Vista DVD to bootup. Wait until you reach the screen that says “Install Now”. Click on the “Repair Your Computer” option. Click on the “Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool”.

The Test Run

The test run would give you three options namely:

1. Basic - limited number of tests
2. Standard - includes all basic tests, LRAND, Stride6 (cache enabled), CHCKR3, WMATS+, and WINVC.
3. Extended - runs all test performed by Basic and Standard plus other exhaustive tests.
