XP SP3 vs Vista SP1
Devil Mountain Software, a small, four-year-old developer in south Florida tested release candidate versions of Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) and XP SP3.
Devil Mountain used DMS Clarity Studio for the test run on a dual-core Dell laptop. Windows XP SP3 performed twice as fast as Vista SP1 which according to Craig Barth, CTO at Devil Mountain, “This doesn’t bode well for Microsoft in our opinion. Microsoft’s biggest challenge with Vista is how to unseat XP.
Devil Mountain’s tests were not extensive and they haven’t looked if the file copying process became faster which was said to be an issue in the current Vista released version. Also, he only used 1GB of ram for testing head on with Windows XP. When used 2GB of ram, Vista performed four percent faster compared to 1GB of ram.
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is the first iteration and improvements would be welcomed with open arms even if they fall short compared to Windows XP which is already on the third and last iteration.
As always, the biggest competitor of Microsoft on their latest operating system is its predecessor.
I believe that the Service Pack 1 improvements on Windows Vistas bodes well on Microsoft contrary to Barth’s claims.

i run 2 laptops at home. one with XP and another Vista/Linux just in case Vista goes cuckoo again. Generally I don’t buy Microsoft software until its 2 years matured but this time I’m making an exception and it has cost me dearly by countless reboots and weird problems.

It seems like not that long ago the argument was why nobody was going to adopt Windows XP because Windows 98 SE was “good enough for most people” and there was no compelling reason to change. All their drivers and software worked fine with Win 98, so why change? I suppose we’ll be having the same discussion in another few years when the successor to Vista comes out and everybody will be happy because “Vista is good enough.”

Microsoft really might want to consider working on compatibility issues. Vista SP1 appearantly is incompatible with certain programs that Vista ran fine. In my view, rather than improving value, Microsoft seems to be reducing the value of its OS with each new incarnation. I am seriously considering buying XP to replace Vista on my computer.

The problem is that win98 was only around for 2 years before the Mistake Edition (ME) came out. XP has been around for 5 whole years, and has built up support and people are used to using it. I am just about to get rid of my vista sp1 install and am wondering whether to reinstall xp or vista. I got vista using the express upgrade system, and it never really worked on my laptop (not sleep or hibernate) and now has some major wireless problem involving a service called WLAN Autoconfig, like Wireless Zero Configuration in xp but can’t be turned off.
I don’t use windows much, as I prefer the speed, stability and beauty of ubuntu (esp. with compiz now ATi drivers support aiglx), only for games. For this I’ve decided to go for xp.

I’ve been using vista for quite some time now and i realy cannot complain. any software issues i come accross i just run them in compatability mode. I’ve seen a huge improvement in vista sp1. i would say most of their problems and issues are sorted out. Here and there there are still some 3rd party programs that dont seem to like running in vista witch is understandable. you cannot expect microsoft to update their os and not update your software. there is nothing wrong with ms vista (in it’s core). I think it’s time for all 3rd party software developers to start making THEIR software compatable with vista. MS spends millions to give their users a feelgood environment witch is a pleasure to use. not to mention it’s improved good looks.
