Business Desktop Deployment 2007
One of the reasons why Vista adoption is slow can be traced back to migration concerns. The cost of migrating from Windows XP to Windows Vista is serious money which companies may put aside for the time being.
The first chunk of costs would hit the deployment stage of the new operating system. In large scale deployment of more than 50K computers, rolling out of Windows Vista needs a lot of resource. Microsoft knows this problem and thus has beefed up their migration tool named Business Desktop Deployment 2007.
Business Desktop Deployment 2007 is one of the most important tools you would need for migration from Windows XP to Windows Vista which could bring your deployment costs to insignificant numbers.
Microsoft describes this as their Solution Accelerator and says this of their product:
The Solution Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) is best-practice guidance for desktop deployment. BDD is targeted at companies that want to reduce deployment time, effort, and cost by increasing the level of automation. It allows administrators to deploy desktops with Zero Touch and Lite Touch interaction at the target PCs. This solution also helps organizations move to a managed environment with standardized desktop images.
BDD 2007 is offered in two versions to support Solution Accelerator component installation on x64 or x86 hosts. Select the version that corresponds with your host hardware type. Both versions of BDD 2007 support deployment of x86 and x64 client operating systems.
After giant savings from BDD, organizations can redirect their resources to training and stuff. Given the simplicity of Windows Vista for average intelligent persons, the training cost required would again be substantially low. The bulk of the costs would be in the migration and testing of applications used by the organization.
There will always be cost involved in migrating from Windows XP to Windows Vista but tools like BDD could help you save money in the short term as well as in the long term once you have realized the full potential of Windows Vista.
