Do People Buy a New Computer with Windows Vista in Mind?

by Milo on May 15th, 2007

Chairman of Asustek Jonney Shih said some commercial users do not want to jump to Windows Vista and would like to keep their XP options open. Gianfranco Lanci, Acer Inc president also said consumers are not expected to buy because of the new operating system. Tony Tseng of Merrill Lynch & Co. says that computer demand which improved in the last quarter cannot be attributed to Windows Vista.

I understand Windows Vista compatibility issues and consumers may not want to jump over at XP right away; but don’t users buy specs with Windows Vista in mind? I don’t think people will put away hundreds of dollars without thinking it should at least be specs ready for Windows Vista. They may buy computers right now without the need for Windows Vista but definitely they have thought about it.

All discussions I have with my colleagues have always made sure the laptop they are buying can run Windows Vista even when some of them want to run Windows XP for the meantime.

There are ways to get around compatibility issues and one of them is through virtualization using Microsoft Virtual Server 2005. People would either buy XP or Windows Vista but they would most likely run the other operating system in a virtual image. The specs they need for this kind of setup would definitely have Windows Vista in mind.

Once again the Microsoft monopoly forces the average pc user to thier will. Most people will use whatever OS is installed on the machine they purchase at BESTBUY and just deal with it. My elderly parents have almost given up using thier email machine since VISTA has such a different feel than XP.

Yup, hardware vendors themselves would want to install Vista to give their hardware the edge in the consumers eyes. I don’t think buyers would glance at Windows XP laptops at BESTBuy.

There is a learning curve in a lot of things. I hope your parents would come to terms with Vista. :)

I bought a NEW laptop with Vista and am Very sorry I did. Neither my USB printer or scanner now works. Wireless wouldn’t stay connected longer than 5 seconds (it was an Acer computer). Then I downloaded Google Earth (2000 proffessional version because Vista wasn’t available. Now NO internet works at all. I HATE this computer. Not sure if it is Vista or Acer’s fault.
