Windows XP is Back

by Milo on April 22nd, 2007

Consumers seem to have less and less options in the power of the machines they purchase because they are tied with requirements of Windows Vista. Unfortunately for a lot of consumers, they wouldn’t want to spend a few hundred of bucks for features they don’t need at the moment.

Dell acknowledges this and has officially announced they are bringing back Windows XP to their packages. They noted that they heard their customers and despite the moves of Microsoft to discontinue the support for Windows XP by the end of 2008, they are offering XP in their hardware sales.

In response, Microsoft says the people who do not want Windows Vista are only a minority.

I believe people who do not want Windows Vista are a minority but budget plays a key role in their decision more than anything else.

Small to large scale businesses with computer assets ranging from 200 (or so) to 200k machines may want Windows Vista, but putting aside budget for machines, software and re-testing of all their applications wouldn’t be a top priority. I don’t think companies would want to worry about their time entry applications, accounting software and other stuff for Windows Vista. Sure we have applications called Virtual PC, Virtual Machines and stuff; but still, only technical hardcore people would go out of their way loading different VMs for their different applications. Common users would dislike the idea of maintaining different environments for their needs.

I am glad that Dell offers Windows XP once again; I also hope that Microsoft ease up a little bit in trashing their old operating system.

Milo…Timely post for me. I bought a Dell XPS M2010 for presenting a financial software we developed which has alot of S Plus, a statistical language. My only choice from Dell at the time was Vista. Unfortunately, S Plus doesn’t have the patch yet to talk to Vista (even though I checked with Insightful - the vendor - before buying the computer and they said they benchtested it. They backpedaled on that one when confronted post Dell purchase) Anyway, how do I get back to XP at this point? Do I have to go out and buy XP or will Microsoft ‘downgrade’ me? The graphics on the Dell are outstanding…will I lose some of that by stepping out of Vista or is it solely the hardware that’s giving me the superior look? To reconfirm your point above, when I asked my Dell rep about this, he said I could choose either XP or Vista on any more XPS m2010 I plan to buy…helpful, huh?

    Thanks

VISTA has made very simple processes inpossible to do. I support LAN-WAN connection at verious hotels. I seems that configuring the client’s laptops have become impossible because of the VISTA interface to LAN connections.

The new default security and the changes in the LAN connector prperties or at least where they are hiding has created a problem. If you cannot connect to the internet through the Hotel’s Access Server, they have to give you your money back. VISTA is going to cause a lot of problems in this area.

I Predict that VISTA will cost Microsoft market share. LINUX is easier to use and less restrictive. The new GUI interfaces have made a lot friendlier than VISTA.

I sell PC’s and servers, I have had to issue refunds b ecause customers dislike VISTA so much they have returned their systems. This never happend when XP was released.
