Windows Vista PatchGuard Cracked

by Milo on October 28th, 2006

Security firm Authentium claimed they have cracked PatchGuard which is included in the 64-bit version of Windows Vista. According to reports, they found a way to disable the protection so that they could install their kernel patches and enable the technology once again.

Symantec and McAfee were not satisfied with Microsoft’s decision to provide those APIs so they can interface into the kernel of the operating system and have their products install the security requirements they require. Kaspersky Labs and Sophos on the other hand say they don’t need to disable PatchGuard to install their own security products.

Security firms are in danger of Microsoft’s attempt to shut them out by incorporating their own security software within the operating system. Microsoft’s PathGuard and One Care are key security technologies that would prevent users from buying other products.
