Vista death watch part X: WinFS
More bad news from MS. I read this over the weekend but didn’t feel the urge to write about it sooner… So here it is: Word has gotten out that Microsoft has offically killed the WinFS (Windows Future Storage) file system as a separate component in Vista! Man, they must be sweating over there in Redmond! I could go on about the fact that this is a good decision because you don’t wanna deliver bad software and all, but come on guys… This is getting pathetic.
Microsoft has been working on WinFS for a decade or so and back in 2004 they said that Vista wouldn’t ship with WinFS and planned to release the file system as an add-on. Last year we had a first beta of WinFS but Beta 2 has now been scrapped.
Quentin Clark, Microsoft’s director of programme management for WinFS, has left a yada-yada post on his blog. It states: “We will continue working the innovations, and as things mature they will find their way into the right product experiences - Windows and otherwise.”
Yeah right, you can read it here if you think it’s interesting…
