Vista Virtual folders

by Vincent on March 12th, 2006

Vista Virtual FoldersTechRepublic has an interesting review of the Windows Vista Virtual Folders: “Virtual Folders is one component of Vista’s new information visualization, organization, and search features. It is built right into the operating system and is designed to relieve us of some types of data management nightmares. And, even at the beta stage, Virtual Folders is one awesome feature.

I totally agree! And some even say that this is the most important feature of MS Vista. It helps us to better manage the information overload we all suffer from. The info overload-problem might be bigger online, but all of us seem to have the same problem on our desktop PC. We have all attempted to keep our data organized and this usually resulted in some form of “Miscellaneous” folder in which you dump data that doesn’t fit into your organizational scheme. Vista has a solution… read the complete review to understand how Virtual Folders work (via geekyinfo.com):

The Custom Virtual Folders are the ones that you create. You create a Custom Virtual Folder in Windows Vista in exactly the same way that you create a Saved Search Query in Windows XP. The only differences in the creation process are that you have a much more refined set of search criteria and when you save the search, it’s actually saved as a Virtual Folder. The main difference in usage is that once you create a virtual folder, you never have to reconfigure the search — you just open the folder and within a moment, the Custom Virtual folder will scan your hard disk and update the listing.

I may be missing something here. I had an XP system with 120G hard drive. I bought a new Vista system with 160G hard drive. I moved my data over. I now only have 5G free on my new hard drive. I USB’d an overflow drive and moved all the pictures and music off to it (many, many G). Now I have 3G on my hard drive. How can I get a picture/map/whatever that shows exactly what is on my hard drive? I am assuming all those little blue/green things are the virtual folders.
