Wait till 2008 for Vista, businesses told

by John on November 14th, 2005

Industry analyst, Gartner, has advised businesses not to upgrade to Windows Vista until 2008.

In a research note published on Friday, Gartner indicated that the first public release of the operating system will be largely security-related. This functionality is already available from third-party products.

The “incremental, evolutionary improvements” on offer late 2006 will not be worth the time and effort compared with “pursu[ing] a strategy of managed diversity”. Windows Vista should only be introduced on new machines from 2008.

IE7 will have security enhancements “to stem defections from IE to Firefox” and “has been accelerated” to be delivered in early 2006.

ZDNet reports, “… the ‘important ability to restrict some browser activities to a lower privileged process will not be available because it requires Vista functionality,’ Gartner cautioned. The analysts acknowledged that companies that use IE7 and Vista will have fewer points of weakness.”
