The current version of Internet Explorer, IE6, is to get the “phishing filter” slated for IE7. The bad news? It only comes as an add-on to the MSN toolbar.

While the security measure will be embedded in IE7, a free 1.3MB download of the add-on is now available in beta form for IE 6/MSN Search Toolbar users running Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2).

eWeek quotes Samantha McManus, a business strategy manager at Microsoft, saying that the toolbar add-on uses the same back-end technology as the phishing protection built into IE 7, and is run by the same Technology Care and Safety team within the MSN unit.

The download is available here.
