Vista Beta slips up on Bluetooth test
David Berlind of Microsoft Vistulations is currently putting the 64-bit version of the Windows OS through its paces. He reports that Vista’s User Access Protection (UAP) feature is not yet up to scratch in its handling of Bluetooth technology. Logging on in the Lesser Privileges mode designed to protect the computer from “overriding” incursions, he discovered a flaw :
I did a simple test. While logged in as an LPU, I attempted to pair my test system with a Bluetooth mouse. Launching of Vista’s Bluetooth configuration wizard proceeded without interruption. Then, when I clicked the “Finish” button on the wizard’s dialog box, not only did the UAP security dialog spring to life, but so too did the Bluetooth mouse (technically, the Bluetooth mouse should have remained de-activated until the proper administrative credentials were keyed into the UAP dialog). Since the UAP dialog has a “Cancel” button, I clicked it thinking that if no administrative credentials are provided, then perhaps the wizard would somehow bonk and the Bluetooth mouse would deactivate. As far as making the UAP dialog disappear, the Cancel button worked fine. But as far as de-activating the Bluetooth mouse, the mouse continued to work as if nothing was wrong. But something is. That something will likely get fixed.
Problems with beta versions of software are inevitable. But it’s always interesting to hear first hand of cracks in the walls. David is blogging his high-end Vista testing over at Microsoft Vistulations.

Now it is no longer beta and it is on sale, but there are still bluetooth problems, where if you install a bluetooth dongle on one computer and install the same one on another both with the same version of windows vista, one will work and the other doesn’t. Waiting for windows updates to fix the problems for those computers that it doesn’t work for, how long will it go on for?

I was quite disappointed with this as I specifically bought a laptop for Internet connectivity using my cellphone. We’re supposed to be going forward aren’t we? I mean should I rather stay with my old working technology, hey?
