Vista hardware requirements : the full story?

by John on September 15th, 2005

The story so far : Back at the TechEd conference, Nigel Page, a Microsoft strategist in Australia, made some remarks about the hardware requirements for Windows Vista. He allegedly stated that Vista would work best on a video card with more than 256MB RAM, 2GB of DDR3 fast memory and a S-ATA 2 hard drive.

Following our report on APC magazine’s interview with Nigel, Robert Scoble criticized Page’s conclusions as follows :

“Sorry, Nigel (the guy they quoted) is wrong. Wrong. Wrong. I’ve been interviewing lots of teams about what Windows Vista will need and it’s nowhere near what this article says.”

Over last weekend, Scoble met up with Nigel Page at the PDC and blogged that Nigel claimed he had been misreported by APC magazine. He had been talking about the general future of hardware, not specifically the requirements for Windows Vista.

I have to say, a statement such as :”Vista will work best on a video card with more than 256MB RAM, 2GB of DDR3 memory and a S-ATA 2 hard drive,” is not easy to misrepresent. However, the clue to this mystery clearly lies in the Vista package revealed this week, initially by Paul Thurrott, that Vista will come in seven separate “editions”, catering for all manner of users.

In the Home category :

Windows Vista Starter Edition
Windows Vista Home Basic Edition
Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
Windows Vista Ultimate Edition (previously known as “Uber” Edition).

In the Business category :

Windows Vista Small Business Edition
Windows Vista Professional Edition
Windows Vista Enterprise Edition.

Page’s “will work best” then becomes explicable as the requirements for the high-end business Enterprise edition. But why all the confusion and claims of misreporting? A mention of the editionality of Vista would have sufficed, surely?

    The Vista hardware confusion continues

Things are already getting confusing with Vista and a huge part of this is due to there being way too much speculation based around way too little information.
Today the Unofficial Windows Vista Weblog  takes it to the next level by assuming t…

If you read the post you’ll see that I’m trying to sort out the semantics of the spat between Nigel Page and Robert Scoble. Logic dictates that “runs best with” applies to the high-end version. You can’t dispute that. How far that trickles down the list, though, is a point we don’t know yet. So I’ve stuck to the facts that can be determined and not speculated about any other of the editions. I think this blog has met your criterion of “not speculating”, don’t you? :-)
