Vista and a good night’s sleep

by John on August 30th, 2005

Turning a Windows computer off has always been a bit of a lottery as the sleep mode could be overrided by applications still running. Windows XP offers several “off” options, including hibernate, standby, and shut down. Pat Stemen, a Program Manager in Microsoft’s Core Operating-system Division said : “Users don’t always understand the difference.”

However, Vista desktop computers will enter a mode called “hybrid sleep.” Vista will save the system state and other information to disk, in case power is lost, but will then enter a sleep mode from which the computer can be jump-started. Being able to send it into a particular kind of sleep at the push of a button will be a boon, said Greg Graceffo, a manager with Microsoft’s Windows Client Unit. “For the end user, there is simplicity. All you really need to know about is sleep.” [Via ZDNet]
