Eweek reviews Windows Vista

by John on August 29th, 2005

Contrary to some opinions, eweek magazine gives a cautious thumbs-up to Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system. In a new review of the current Beta 1 version, eweek’s Jason Brooks concludes : “Vista will offer compelling new bits to users, administrators and developers alike. Provided that Microsoft … can manage to iron out all the wrinkles, the most important feature in Vista may be its support for reduced user privileges and the security benefits that come with it.”

Limitations may be : “It’s too early to know what Microsoft will charge for Vista, but we don’t expect the price to stray much from that of Windows XP. Vista works essentially the same with or without its 3-D-accelerated eye candy [Aero], but organizations excited over the prospect of window-decoration translucency (if any such organizations exist) will have to shell out for beefier graphics cards.”

Search facilities may also pose minor problems : “We predict Vista’s file explorer tweaks, intended to make data easier to locate and organize, will take some time ~ or maybe even training ~ for end users to learn.”
