Could Linux benefit from Vista problems?

by John on August 29th, 2005

According to Sal Cangeloso over at XYZ Computing, Linux should try to capitalize on the problems the Windows Vista team is having getting the operating system up to full original spec without breaking the memory bank : “the changes are constantly being scaled back from what was originally promised. Whether it’s the lack of a new file system or the ‘Monad’ scripting shell, the absence of innovation in this operating system is giving it a black eye, no matter how nice the GUI is or how much Internet Explorer 7 resembles FireFox.”

The site speculates that to run Vista optimally a 3.0GHz Pentium 4-type processor might be required plus a dedicated graphics card with DirectX9. “Given the recent advances in Linux on the desktop and its lax hardware requirements many desktop users will find this to be a great alternative,” says Cangeloso.

It should be noted that Vista’s public release is well over a year away. Many users planning upgrades now will wait for the new machines to come onto the market. Indeed, Microsoft is aware that the delays stalling Vista’s release may adversely affect the sale of computer hardware in the meantime as buyers hold off their investments. [Via Slashdot]
