Acrylic for Windows Vista Won’t Hurt Adobe
Adobe commenter John Nack hits back at some reports that Microsoft wants to take some of Adobe’s marketshare with its Acrylic product. We have said as much in these pages : “We understand that sources at Redmond say that Expression Studio’s principal aim is to take back some of the design ground conceded to Adobe and Macromedia.”
John writes : “Has anyone else had enough of these “Microsoft Acrylic is the [Photoshop/Flash/Illustrator/FreeHand/Fireworks/etc.] Killer!” articles? Is the technology press so bored that they have to invent conflicts? If I were Microsoft, I’d be deflecting these assertions like crazy. Why? Because they set unrealistic, misleading expectations that end up reflecting poorly on new products.”
Microsoft evangelist Robert Scoble also thinks so : “I agree with John. Personally, taking over Adobe’s market just isn’t gonna happen ~ at least not near term and not without Adobe stumbling badly (InDesign took over from a company, Quark, that forgot about customer service). But journalists and bloggers love to report on conflict. So, expect more ‘killers’ ahead!”
Well, we don’t do “killers” here, but we will report fearlessly on the facts as they emerge. Expect more from the PDC (Professional Developers Conference) in three weeks.
