New Windows Server for Mid Market

by John on August 24th, 2005

Microsoft’s Small Business Server is being complemented by a new Windows server aimed at medium-sized businesses (50 to 250 PCs). The product will cost $6,444 for a minimum specification and will bundle together Windows Server, Exchange Server and Microsoft Operations Manager, plus 50 client-access licenses.

The project was confirmed by Orlando Ayala, Senior Vice President of the Small and Midmarket Solutions and Partner Group in an interview with Microsoft Watch. He believes there are around 1.7 million potential mid-market customers for the server.

“Microsoft plans to come at the mid-market with a solution very much like Windows Small Business Server, a product that Microsoft considers one of its most successful”, Ayala said. “The five [bundled products] will look like a single server, from a virtual view.”

Microsoft Watch said : “Sources close to the company have said Microsoft would like to make such a product one of its ‘Longhorn Wave’ offerings, which would put it roughly in the 2006 to 2008 timeframe.”
